Many Fire Departments across the country participated in Fire Prevention Week from October 5-11 and some throughout the month of October. Fire Departments promote Fire Prevention Week by hosting several types of educational, safety reminder community events like

•School Classroom visits

•Community Safety Towns

•Fire Station Visits and Open Houses

•Fundraisers for Victims

•Local Library Readings with Safety Demonstrations

Protecting our community and families is critical, so it’s important to retain fire prevention lessons learned and implement those fire safety and prevention tactics year round. How do we do keep Fire Prevention and Fire Safety in the minds of families and Children? Many companies naturally choose promotional products to hand out to kids and parents serving as reminders to practice fire safety year round.

What can we do to make these promotional giveaways more effective?

My suggestion would be to tie in these fire safety promotional items to interactive contests created by fire fighters, teachers and local businesses promoting fire safety year round!

Here are some examples of enhancing your fire prevention promotional product giveaways:

1-Kids Coloring Books with your Fire Department safety message and Imprint: Kids love coloring books! When they review the coloring book learning about fire safety, the Fire Department and School can collaborate and offer an additional contest for kids to create their own “Fire Safety Message Coloring Poster” that teachers and fire fighters could judge the winners. The best colorful educational posters created are hung up around the school as part of a Fire Prevention Art Gallery reminding students and teachers about the importance of Fire Safety and Prevention.

2-Kids Plastic Fire Hats: Fire Departments give out colored plastic fire hats for kids. How about holding a coordinated Fire Department and School fundraising contest using the plastic fire hats with help from parents and teachers in your community. Have kids use these hats during the month of October to collect donations from family members and friends. The kids would donate money collected to the school and then the school would present the funds to the local fire department to help raise money for low income families, providing gifts and food during the holidays and to help purchase fire safety related equipment helping to keep families safe. You can also use the money raised for burn victims in your area. All the kids that donate money to their school will get a voucher for a Free Visit to the Fire Station at a later date in the year that the school can organize. A Trip like this is great for reinforcing the importance of fire safety and what fire fighters do to fight fires. You can also cross promote Fire Prevention Week with Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October by using Pink Plastic Fire Hats and have kids and adults collect for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and donate the funds to your favorite Breast Cancer Awareness charity.

3-Fire Safety Bookmarks: After giving out fire safety bookmarks during Fire Prevention Week…Team up with your local library and Fire Department and give kids incentive to read more about fire safety. Have the child present the bookmark to the local library and after a child takes out a book about the topic of fire safety, prevention or Firefighting and then give them a Fire Safety Water Bottle or another promotional gift.

Be as creative as you want to be…Work together with businesses, schools, and the community and let’s keep Fire Safety in the minds of your community year round!
